Grosset Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2007

Tasting Notes

This is fabulous: very much in the mould of the previous 16 examples of the Grosset blend of Clare semillon (from the Grosset Springvale Vineyard) and Adelaide Hills sauvignon blanc but more immediately appealing, tangier and more mouth-watering than at least the previous two vintages which needed more time to show their best. There is a primal intensity and purity of cool tropical flavours – lychee, guava, gooseberries and, more overtly passionfruit than in recent vintages. The fruit is tightly coiled yet bursting to reveal its succulent juiciness, steely and fine, revealing some haunting minerality on a taut lingering finish that zings.

Powerful and complex, with barrel ferment obvious on the bouquet; mouthfilling with abundant flavour; Clare Valley Semillon gives it a robust character. Rating 94

The standout blend in this class with mastery in the mixing of tropical and citrus fruits to begin, then stone fruits splashed with lemon, some spice, crisp acidity, excellent palate weight, and an elegance and smoothness about it while remaining youthful and vibrant.
